Since graduating from The Victorian College of The Arts Gary has established himself as one of Melbourne's most critically respected and sought after freelance stage directors and theatre makers.  He has directed the Australian premieres and national tours of several commercial shows, as well as classic texts, contemporary plays, new Australian scripts, and devised projects. His work encompasses large scale commercial plays and musicals, mainstage works, independent shows and self produced theatre projects. ​He also works as a dramaturg, script advisor, outside eye and mentor, as well as a playwright and freelance writer. ​He is a recipient of THE GRACE WILSON TRUST AWARD for writing, THE JIM MARKS SCHOLARSHIP for Artistic Practice and THE MIKE WALSH FELLOWSHIP for directing. He is also a GREENROOM AWARD WINNER and multiple nominee for his directing, playwriting and dramaturgy work.  His recent credits include the Australian premiere of “33 Variations” starring academy award winning actor Ellen Burstyn at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre, the Australian premiers of “Buyer and Cellar“ for The Melbourne Theatre Company , “Hand to God” and “Bad Jews” for The Vass Theatre Group,  and “Resident Alien” for Cameron Lukey Productions. In 2017 he directed “Angels In America: Parts One and Two” for Cameron Lukey Productions, and the national tour of his adaptation of “Therese Raquin” for his company Dirty Pretty Theatre.  Other recent credits include “POMONA”, “ROAM”, “The Pride”, “Day One. A Hotel. Evening”, “Laramie.10 Years On” and “Oh Well Never Mind Bye” all for Red Stitch Actors Theatre.​For his own company Dirty Pretty Theatre he has directed and written the plays “The Lonely Wolf” “Acts Of Deceit (Between Strangers In A Room)” , “Something Natural but Very Childish” , “The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant”  and “Therese Raquin".  He received a Green Room Award for Best Director in Independent Theatre  in 2010, and was nominated in the same category for his work in 2014.  He has worked as an assistant and resident director at the Melbourne Theatre Company on the plays “All About My Mother” (2010),“Songs for Nobodies” (2010),  “The Gift” (2011) ,“Australia Day” (2012) and the Melbourne Theatre Company and Chunky Move Melbourne Festival collaboration “ Complexity of Belonging” (2014).
